Other Installation Requirements

EZ SQL Restore requires an internet connection to complete the installation.  Also please make sure that you have the necessary system permissions to install software before launching the EZ SQL Restore installation.

If you run into any other issues during installation please contact HawkeSoft at support@hawkesoft.net.  We would be glad to assist you in the installation process.

Basic Functionality

Navigating Database Servers

Database servers can be navigated by using the “Database Server” drop down on the right hand side of the application.  Depending on your options EZ SQL Restore will attempt to auto-detect SQL 2000/2005 instances.  If your desired instance does not appear you can type it directly in the drop down.  After you have chosen an instance of SQL Server click “Refresh” to display the databases on that instance.  The necessary SQL services must be running for EZ SQL Restore to connect to an instance of SQL Server.  Also ensure that you have sufficient permissions to access the desired instance.  Depending on your server configuration the database server name may be case sensitive.  EZ SQL Restore can only browse local instances of SQL Server.

Navigating Backup Directories

Backup directories can be navigated by using the “Backup Directory” text box.  EZ SQL Restore will attempt to auto-detect the default backup directory based on the currently selected instance of SQL Server.  If you would like to use a different backup directory click the browse (“…”) button to search for a specific folder on the local machine.  You can also create new folders within this dialog.  Click “OK” once you have chosen the correct backup directory.  Ensure that you have sufficient permissions to access the backup directory you have chosen.

Backing-Up Databases

Select a database from the “Databases on Server” list box.  Drag the database to the “Backup Files” list box and release the mouse button to drop it.  Click “OK” on the confirmation box and you’re done!

Backing-Up Multiple Databases

Select multiple databases from the “Databases on Server” list box.  You can select multiple databases using CTRL+Click or SHIFT+Click.  Drag the databases to the “Backup Files” list box using the right mouse button and then release the mouse button to drop them.  Click “OK” on the confirmation box and you’re done!

Restoring Databases

Select a backup file from the “Backup Files” list box.  Drag the backup file to the “Databases on Server” list box and over the database you wish to restore into.  The currently selected database will be highlighted in grey and will be the target of the restore.  Release the mouse button to drop it.  Click “OK” on the confirmation box and you’re done!

Restoring and Creating New Databases

Select a backup file from the “Backup Files” list box.  Drag the backup file to the “[New Database]” list box and release the mouse button to drop it.  Enter an appropriate name (no system or existing database names allowed) in the “New Database Name” text box.  Click “OK” and you’re done!

Advanced Functionality

Logging

EZ SQL Restore logs all successful creates, backups, and restores of databases that it performs.  It also logs the exact T-SQL statement that was performed.  To view the log file use the File à View Log menu item.  Each log entry contains a date/time stamp, as well as the user who performed the action. This can be used for auditing purposes.  The log file also contains any errors that may occur while using the application.  These errors can be examined to assist with troubleshooting.

If the log file becomes too large, it can be cleared by using the File à Clear Log menu item.

Options

-         Kill Active Connections on Restore: When checked, all active database connections are automatically killed on the database to be restored before performing the actual restore. Recommended Setting: Checked

-         Reset Backup Directory on Database Creation: When checked, the backup files directory will automatically reset to the default backup directory after performing a database create and restore.  Recommended Setting: Un-Checked

-         Use Trusted Connection: When checked, uses a trusted connection (Windows Authentication) to connect to all SQL Server instances.  Recommended Setting: Checked

-         Auto-Detect SQL 2000 Instances: Attempts to auto-detect all local instances of SQL Server 2000.  This may cause the initial load of EZ SQL Restore to take longer.  Recommended Setting: Un-Checked, unless running SQL Server 2000

-         Auto-Detect SQL 2005 Instances: Attempts to auto-detect all local instances of SQL Server 2005.  Recommended Setting: Checked

Registration

Purchasing Licenses

EZ SQL Restore licenses can be purchased from the main HawkeSoft web site, http://www.hawkesoft.net/.  Licenses are available in multi-server packs with a significant per-license savings.

Registering EZ SQL Restore

To register EZ SQL Restore use the Help à About menu item.  If the product is an evaluation copy, and you are connected to the internet the “Register Product” button will be enabled. Click the “Register Product” button and enter your registration key.  You must restart the EZ SQL Restore application for the registration to take effect.

Troubleshooting

Can not auto-detect SQL Server instances

Make sure the current user has sufficient permissions to connect to the instance(s).  Also make sure the SQL Server service(s) are running.  If the instances can not be auto-detected they can be manually entered in the “Database Server” drop down.

Can not connect to SQL Server instance

Make sure the current user has sufficient permissions to connect to the specified instance.  Also make sure the SQL Server service is running.

Can not perform backups or restores while using a specific file path

Make sure the current user has sufficient file system permissions to the specified directory.

Can not create a new database even though no database with that name currently exists

Make sure the name is not a system database name.  Also ensure that the name does not match an old database whose .mdf and .ldf files may still be present in the current SQL Server instance’s data directory.

The screen will not refresh

During a large backup or restore the program may temporarily stop refreshing the screen.  Wait for the action to complete and then check the application again.

Can not connect to the Registration Server

Make sure that the database server has internet connectivity.  The application allows for 10 disconnected uses before it will stop functioning.

Can not register the product

Make sure that the registration key you are trying to use is typed in correctly and not already in use on another server.
